This subject introduces students to the law and practice of income and business taxation in Australia. It focuses on the principles and law governing the assessment of income and deductibility of expenditure. It also covers the treatment of capital gains and losses, and the income tax provisions relating to individuals, partnerships, companies, and trusts.  It deals with some provisions relating to tax administration, compliance and the objections and appeal process. Core provisions of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1936 and the Income Tax Act 1997 together with the legislation relating to Fringe Benefits Tax and the Goods and Services Act will be examined, as well as many important cases which have created the body of law in the area of taxation.
